What is best, rare outfits with low stars or common outfits with high stars?

In all honesty I find common outfits are rather useless the farther along in the game you get. And when it comes to what rare outfits are better, they all are different depending on a challenge, it is more of what types are better. Obviously Legendary clothing items are going to be the best to level up because they give more points, but they are rare to come across unless you score high on a leaderboard. Epic is kind of in the same ball park. So Rare clothing is going to be the highest and more achievable option to level up, but it will take a lot of Rubucks.
