The forge, or smithy is where you can work on metal and metal ore. Repairing the forge is one of the tasks that needs to be done early in the game when Zippy asks you to.
You should have the resources at this point in order to repair the forge. If you don't check your chest storage and also try returning to Zippy a couple of times, and trying again.
