Super Monster Mayhem:Rampage... Just How Super is it?

Super Monster Mayhem:Rampage... Just How Super is it?

At first glance, Super Monster Mayhem Rampage from eRepublik Labs (the group behind the online global strategy game eRepublik) is another simple time waster for those long waits between doing other things. However, although it is technically a simple game it is easy to get lost in this unique monster-themed arcade rampage.

The game is free to play as is, but removing the ads will cost you a dollar. The ads aren't in the actual gameplay screen, but scroll across the bottom of the "You died, try again" interim page and every few deaths pop up full screen. Unlike the big scary monster, they don't hurt anyone and are barely a problem. But remember, giving the developers $.99 if you enjoy their game is good karma for everyone.

Gameplay transforms the player into a monster on the run, dashing up the side of a remarkably tall skyscraper covered in game-ending billboards. The billboards will toss you down to the waiting arms of the authorities immediately, but watch out. The police have opened fire on you from the windows and letting them survive will eventually cost you your freedom.

The controls are a basic tap to collect victims and swipe to avoid billboards, but coordinating those efforts into a good run is tricky. The virtual climb is a relatively unique action, making the learning curve on the game's mechanics almost as steep as the million story hotel you are climbing.

The graphics and sound effects match the retro-arcade theme of the game, but the stand out in ridiculous animation is the dinosaur. He looks like a high school mascot that jumped off of a package of store brand Kool Aid. He is ridiculous, but he fits into the motive as well as anything else.

Overall, the game is undoubtedly worth $.99. Is it going to be a game that keeps you coming back for months on end, probably not unless you really have a thing for pretending to eat cops. Just like with all games of this sort, it gets repetitive. But I can honestly say that it is the first game of this type that I have played in a while that won't mercilessly slaughter you randomly on a whim. None of the cops randomly fire a completely unavoidable nuke or explode when you tap them. There is just a dinosaur and the foolish mortals who dare stand in his way and we think that is all right (for the dinosaur)...

We gave the game 4 stars for odd graphics and for being to repetitive to play for any extended amount of time.
