Hack-and-slash spree with Stormblades

Hack-and-slash spree with Stormblades

Stormblades puts you in the shoes of what seems to be a treasure-seeking vagrant as he slashes his way through formidable monsters that block his path.

Developed by Kiloo Games, Stormblades is available to download for free on Android and iOS platforms. Microtransactions are also available to purchase if you wish to do so. Essence is what the game offers the resource to upgrade weapons. There also seems to be no ads to be seen which is always a good thing.

Stormblades is a hack n' slash action RPG to some extent and will most likely be compared to the iOS game, Infinity Blade and perhaps those who make that comparison are mostly right. You start the game immediately. No background information. No story. No reason to what you are doing aside from just running this linear path and just hack through whatever is standing in your way. When you enter combat, you are to slash away at this monster while simultaneously waiting for visual queues to counter what the monster will do. Counter-swiping, meaning going against the attack of the monster. For example if he is going for vertical downward strike, you do a vertical upward to parry the attack. The monster also does moves that can't be parried and you can only dodge out of the way. You do this by double tapping the screen. And… that’s pretty much it. For the whole game this is what you will do.

The monsters increase in difficulty and toughness when they start popping up wearing armor and that just means you have to whack them around more to break the armor. Also there is also one progression system in the game which is the weapon upgrade. You absolutely need this because the enemies get frustratingly tanky and become real damage sponges.

You upgrade your weapon by earning Essence--the sort of currency in the game. You can also purchase it with real money but do NOT do so. You'd be hit by buyer's remorse too soon. And when you see these things, you can just imagine (yes imagine in your head) on what the future holds in this game. Since it literally just throws tankier enemies your way and you needing to upgrade your weapon just to not feel so helpless. A VERY important thing to note is, at the time of this writing (March 22, 2015), the game has god-awful crashes randomly occurring. It happens too often—almost all the time. Even the users in the Google play store are having these crashes often. If you even have the patience to start the game each time a random crash occurs, and the game has quite long load times too, you are greeted with a game that isn't so impressive to begin with.

The graphics can be considered one of the game’s saving grace as it is quite pretty to look at and the movements the protagonist does is quite fluid and believable. The lush terrain he traverses are a pleasant distraction. Too bad these things whiz by so quickly and you have to focus on the enemy to anticipate its movements to properly defend yourself. The sound is good too but nothing phenomenal to linger in your head for some time.

Stormblades is a nice game to pass just a few minutes of time. Because when the game starts, in about five minutes, the game has shown you everything it has to offer and it just goes downhill from there. Upon reaching the point where the enemies are so impossibly hard to defeat if you don’t grind to get more Essence or just pay up for it, it just reaches tedium. Stormblades is a good try in a platform that is lacking any good Infinity Blade-like games. If you really like the genre, try it. But if you are just wondering if games of this type are nice, look somewhere else.
