Putting Out Fires with Sprinkle Junior

Sprinkle Junior is a water-physics based puzzle game designed for tiny future firefighters and is a spin-off of the original Sprinkle - a similar game for bigger firefighters. The game was developed by the folks at Mediocre, whose game Smash Hit was voted as one of the best of 2014 by The App Store.

The game costs $1.99 and is available across all platforms. Mediocre made it a point to keep the app ad and in-app purchase free and parents everywhere rejoiced.

The gameplay involves shooting water at flames from a tiny fire truck. Some levels include an additional step like polishing the recently extinguished rocks into gems or feeding the now soggy food to hungry monsters and some levels just require the player to figure out how to put out the flames. The truck never runs out of water. There is no chance to die and start over. Starting over in this game is a personal choice and not a consequence, making it perfect for smaller people to practice problem solving in a fun and challenging way.

The graphics bright and colorful. The characters are all monsters, but some how not scary ones and the music it energetic without being abrasive. One word of warning about the SFX, the water sounds and animations are very realistic, so this app might be directly responsible for a few extra potty breaks if used as a road trip diversion.

The target audience for this app is around 2 - 5 realistically, with five-year-olds being the most likely to solve all thirty levels in a matter of minutes and then be bored again. Overall, this app is a great introduction to cognitive problem solving and is well-worth the price of admission, even if it is a little short.
