Rop: A delightful deceptive puzzle
Rop is the type of game you look at your friend playing and say something along the lines of “Why would you play that it looks super easy.” And you wouldn’t be wrong for the first few levels you breeze through. But then you get further in and it begins to start messing with you. This is what great puzzlers do, lure you in and then shatter your mind.
Rop is a casual puzzle game from MildMania studios available on iOS and Google Play. The iOS version has the second pack add on for $.99 and the Google Play variant just has the first pack but is free with moderately heavy ad support.
Rop is a puzzle game where you untangle various shapes and line to match the pattern of an image given in an octagon board. The concept itself is pretty straight forward, but the gameplay is very addicting. It starts out simple enough with the beginning puzzles giving you little to no resistance. The initial rush of confidence quickly wears off once you make it past level twenty. Then the difficulty scales up dramatically. What seems like a simple shape quickly devolves into an anger filled profanity laced screaming at the screen as you can figure out why it won’t work. After the tears of frustration have been extinguished and you are victorious you feel pride. And after the ad break, it’s back to the same vicious cycle again.
Graphically Rop is nothing special. There is nothing particularly special about the way it looks. The interface is very clean and there isn’t any collision of visual issues that take away from the game. The gameplay is quick and responsive and the sound provides an eerie soothing effect on the madness that is sure to come.
The only complaint that I do have isn’t so much with the game but with the intrusiveness of the ads. During the middle of the game a 30 second video ad will pop up with no way of closing it. I understand monetization of mobile games and I do believe developers deserve to get paid for their work. But with these tactics it completely draws you out of it. It happens on a regular five minute interval or when you complete a level. A small banner would be just as effective.
At the end of the day though, Rop is still a great puzzle game. The seemingly simplistic design combined with the clever diabolicalness of some levels make this a must download. While nothing stunning visually it has a clear and responsive interface. Mixed with the sound that provides a relaxing backdrop you would be hard pressed to find a better puzzler. While the ads are distracting, Rop is still a must have for anybody who wants to have a challenging puzzle experience.
