What is the purpose of the rubbish bins? They don't seen to do anything

If you're holding something like plates, teddy bears, slippers, etc you can get rid of it by using the rubbish bin.

Once you pick up an item you can’t put it down unless you put it in the place designated for said item. Say for instance you’re in the restaurant and you have 3 burgers
