What does immersive mode do?

What does immersive mode do? Someone said that it made it so the on-screen buttons were not there on the screen, visibly anyway I believe that's what he meant was just visibly. but it doesn't seem to do anything, the buttons are still clearly there and I see absolutely no difference anywhere in the game. Not in the levels or in the level selection area, there's no difference. What does that do?
