What use are the coins and ed things in the game? They must have a purpose but I cannot figure it out.

The coins can be used to buy extra boosters if you run out while playing. The other items are hearts which are your lives. If you fail a level you lose a heart and when you run out you can't play any more levels until the lives regenerate (or you buy more).
