Gamer reviews for League of Stickmen
Chaotic Fun
The title of the game may deter you from purchasing it because it might summon some images of the early stick figure Flash games. However, this is not the case. The art direction may be simple, but there are lots of details in it, and the animations are robust.
League of Stickmen is priced at $0.99, but it is essentially $1.98 because one of the characters is for sale at $0.99. Is the latter worth the additional cost? The answer is a resounding YES. Aside from unlocking a great character, there are in-game currencies included in the package (25,000 gold coins, 20 gems) that you can use in upgrading your characters, gambling on items, or unlocking new heroes. There are also in-app purchases option ranging from $0.99 - $19.99, all of them are packages of gems and gold coins.
Gameplay is all about button-mashing action. This is a side-scroller beat-em-up that features a vast array of moves and a bevy of different foes. There are also epic boss battles that you are going to endure. You are going to grind for upgrades in both your skills and equipment. Looting is also an important part of this game, and the RNG is a little bit harsh with its low probability of dropping great items, but is manageable as long as you spend time revisiting previous levels.
For each “stage”, there are five levels and you unlock them one by one by beating the easiest level leading up to the boss stage. Then you go on repeating the same process with beefier enemies with higher attack damage output.
There are two in-game currencies, namely gold coins and gem. Gold coins are used in upgrading skills and equipment while gems are used in unlocking heroes and gambling on “epic” items. You cannot buy equipment in this game, instead, you are going to pray for the drops every time your enemies explode into tiny pieces. Because of this, there is a grinding system that allows you to play the game in great lengths. Is this a bad thing? No, because League of Stickmen is a perfect pick-and-drop game. Each session lasts about a minute or two. You can play this game within the tiny sliver of your schedule and have a blast with it. Playing the game in successive hours is not recommended because you will get bored.
Graphics are nice, it is a stylized “Flash game” art direction with lots and lots of frames worth of animation. This is why the game looks so good. There are not much details, colors, or photorealistic graphics, only fast and crisp animations.
League of Stickmen has the best sound effects / background music, at least for me. The grunts and the explosions are clear, and the guitar riffs are wonderful. You will not mute this game because the sound / music is more than competent.
It is worth buying a little bit of gems with real money here and there if you want to get the other heroes. Good thing is, you can try them even if you do not have enough gems to unlock them. You will have an idea which heroes are fitting in your playstyle. Each of the heroes are unique from each other and they have different set of skills, strengths and weaknesses, and strategic upgrade paths / equipment biases.
League of Stickmen is one of those games that should remain in your smartphone / tablet. It is very easy to drop and play the game and enjoy the little moments you have had with it. The graphics may look unattractive the first time you lay your eyes on them. But the gameplay, and the animations are just to fun for you to ignore this little gem.
