Gems are rather important resources in the game that you might want to get your hands on. Gems are the premium currency in Idle Supermarket Tycoon, and are used specifically to purchase/unlock Epic Upgrades -- which are the passive skills you are entitled to earn as you progress in the game. Gems can be obtained through IAP (in-app purchase) and are sold in bulk quantities.

However, before spending a dime on Gems, you might want to consider earning them with a little elbow grease (actually thru watching ads and completing missions). Below are some helpful tips on how to get them for free!

1. Simply playing the game and completing missions as they are requested. During our first try on the game, we haven't checked missions until we got to Hongkong -- and it turns out, it is actually helpful to just play the game as is and tinker with the missions later on when you reach bigger cities. The reason for this is that you'll basically save up all the Gems that you will receive for completing each mission (and you easily will especially when you get to bigger cities). The succession of missions range from reaching a certain level of upgrade on a department, unlocking a department, unlocking a city, unlocking a certain product in a department, and the like. You'll be surprised to see how much gems you get to collect by completing your missions.

2. Improve on your VIP Marketing skill (on epic upgrades). VIP marketing improves the value of gems you receive from VIP customers. That said, whenever you entertain a VIP customer (yellow sports car), chances are, it will give you bigger chunk of gems compared when you do not have this Epic Upgrade. However, take note that this skill does not affect how often you get to draw Gems (instead of cash) from entertaining VIP customers.

3. Once a day (or every after 24 hours), you'll get the chance to fill up your daily profit multiplier (that x2 profit multiplier you get from watching videos). You might have noticed that this profit multiplier has a gauge (when you start, it is set to 6 tiers) that tells you how long you get to enjoy the said boost. Upon filling up the gauge, you'll usually receive a complimentary bonus of 5 gems -- and each consecutive day you do this, the amount of gems you receive will increase by 5 gems (1st day 5 Gems, 2nd day 10 Gems, 3rd day 15 Gems ...)

4. Think twice which Epic Upgrades you'd unlock first. Doing so wont necessarily improve the rate of how your earn Gems, but conserving them by only purchasing the skills that are truly impactful to your current level or progress in the game will help you save a bunch of them for later use. For instance, although it is wise to unlock the Car Dealership and Real Estate Agency Managers (boosts the productivity of each department by 50%) in the Epic Upgrades, it wouldn't be of any benefit to you if you currently do not have access to these departments in your supermarket. For one thing, these 2 Epic Upgrades are among the most costly ones. Among all skills, initially focus on improving the "VIP marketing", and "Compulsive customers" and the unlock the Produce and Bakery Managers -- to help quickly boost/regain your funds whenever you restart from one city to another.
