If you have an empire shield on and you send your hero after a monster, are your troops still protected without the hero there?

If you have a empre shield on then no one can attack your empire. But if your troops are out side your wall (Enemies) can then attack them. If your Hero is with your troops then they are stronger because of Hero boosts.
