Gamer reviews for WWE Immortals

Beauty is only Reskin Deep

NetheRealm needs to be applauded for their excellent reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise. However, they should not be given a free pass whenever they commit injustice, no pun intended. Case in point, the Injustice fighting game. True, Injustice is a gorgeous game and it is mind-blowing that it is able to run in mobile platforms. However, the core gameplay may be argued to be at least competent, but there is just no excuse for performance issues, and the atrocious net code (if the servers are not down). You might ask, what is the point of mentioning Injustice at all in a review of WWE Immortals? Other than the games characters share the same hobby of hitting the gym, WWE Immortals is a reskin of Injustice. You take all the good and more of the bad of the latter to the former.

Even if you like the base gameplay of Injustice, and a fan of World Wrestling Entertainment, it is hard to recommend this game if it just leaks with severe performance issues. The app keeps on crashing, the servers are perpetually down, and it freezes my current generation iPad Mini. If you are willing to plow through these, well, WWE Immortals is a superb game.

WWE Immortals is free-to-play with in-app purchases options. Characters are locked into tiers, (Bronze, Silver, Gold) meaning you need to go grinding. Take note, it is not just the characters themselves are locked, but the better versions of what are available for free. You can hold on to the coins / cards / credits you get by merely playing the game and buy the upgrades with these credits / cards / credits , or just purchase the booster packs which will net you the outright unlocks of fighters. If you did play Injustice, everything is exactly the same, including the in-app purchasing and character progression.

The in-app purchases and character unlocking systems are not really that bad. Since you have to familiarize core gameplay, you might as well get credits for the “tutorial phase”. Though the combat is simplistic, it is wildly entertaining and needs a little bit of strategy and timing. You tap the screen to punch and kick, and if any connects, there will be an on-screen prompt to swipe in certain directions to unleash a more powerful attack.

This powerful attack will knock your opponent, the damage dealt is not much better than the basic attacks but it will give you an advantage to plan for the next assault. In order to block your opponent’s attacks, you must put two fingers over the screen.

As mentioned earlier, the fighters are of different versions, being Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Some of the fighters are only available in a certain tier (Stone Watcher the Rock is exclusive in Silver), and some have an “upgraded” version to other tiers (e.g. Pyromancer Nikki Bella in Bronze then Solar Assassin Nikki Bella in Silver). You can level up your characters with all the cards and credits you received by playing the game.

Just like its paternal twin, Injustice, WWE Immortals is gorgeous to look at. The animations may be limited, but still, the details are fantastic. Aside from graphical anomalies here and there, this game runs smooth, until it does not, which is more often than we’d like. It is plain obvious that this game had high production values by its looks and polish, at least in the graphical department. The sound effects, just like the animations, are just a few, and you can hear them not just repeat on the same character, but across all characters. The music is so-so, it tries to be epic, but it comes off as just “adequate”.

For free, WWE Immortals is a great game. You do not need to buy the pack, but if you like a certain wrestler and just wants to go use him / her, feel free to buy some of the packs so that you can acquire him or her faster. There is a stamina system that prevents you from grinding through, so a purchase might be worth it if you are really into it, not a bad idea given the quality, albeit not its technical quality, of WWE Immortals. It is still worth dropping some money into this game, regardless.
