Review: Escape the City of Traps in Sorcery! 2

Inkle carries on the Sorcery! saga with the second installment of the four part gamebook series.

This part of the series will have our valiant hero/heroine entering the dangerously booby-trapped city of Khare, armed with a strong sense of purpose and a few decent weapons. Trouble is waiting to beset your journey around every corner, but as in life, nothing is over until it's over and in a game/book that openly invites rewinding, experimenting, trial and error, it's never really over.

The price of the game is the same as the rest in the series: $4.99. This price covers your entire trip through the Cityport- start to finish. And just like always no ads or in-app purchases.

The gameplay of the second book is almost exactly the same as the first with a few additions. This Part will bring in a mini-game called "Swindlestones" to contribute a bit of longevity, extra cash and (possibly) a bit of frustration. The mini-game is played like a quick game of BullSh**. Each player takes turns guessing how many of each number is showing on two sets of dice. Players will start with between 2 and 4 dice and the object is to keep as many as possible. The first player to run out of dice is the loser and has to pay out the bet to the winner. These side games are more than just a passing entertainment, they are also important way to collect clues for game's new system of organizing plot points.

Talking to folks has taken a turn for the complicated in this second leg of your journey. Your conversations with travelers, townspeople and mythical creatures will unlock clues that can change the direction of your whole story if a stone ends up unturned.

Sorcery 2 manages to easily stretch gameplay out to twice as long as the first title in the series. And since the mobile gamebook offers more choices, consequences and alternate paths than even the original paper copy of the story, you run the risk of getting lost in the Cityport of Traps in more ways than one.

Stride out boldly, choose the choice that is laughably improbable, see what happens, then go back and try again. You literally have nothing to lose.
